Fairgrieve Compression Moulding General Manager Barry Davidson says he is looking forward to telling the ‘fantastic success story’ of the recent transformation of the business when meeting other delegates at a leading plastics industry conference next week.
Mr Davidson is attending the Interplas 2023 Exhibition & Conference at the NEC in Birmingham, an event which is now in its 75th year and attracts world-leading businesses to discuss and discover the latest innovations in plastics manufacturing processes, technologies, materials and services.
He is attending on the back of the year in which Fairgrieves has secured a 50% rise in customer orders, supplying clients across the UK, Europe and Asia in the mining and offshore, construction, automotive and defence sectors.
Just last week the business, which has been established 110 years, was Highly Commended at the national 2023 Engineering and Manufacturing Awards for Manufacturing Productivity Improvement.
This week, as well as attending the conference, Mr Davidson will also be at the North East Business Awards, where Fairgrieves is a finalist in the Small Business of the Year category.
It has all stemmed from a focus being placed on efficiency and continual improvement of processes across the business over the past 18 months, led by Mr Davidson, but importantly with the full support of a long-serving and highly knowledgeable team.
“I can say with some confidence that there won’t be many businesses in the NEC with a longer history in plastics that Fairgrieves, nor many businesses which have been established longer than the conference and exhibition itself,” said Mr Davidson, who was appointed two years ago after the business was bought by private investor Daniel Beaumont.
“I don’t think the business had much to say at events like this in recent years, but we head there this year with a great success story to tell of how we have transformed the way we work over the past 18 months in particular, and how we are currently manufacturing products for clients across the UK, Europe and Asia.
“We’ve also upped our work in terms of product development in recent times, including recently working on a new development project with a major blue-chip company to produce a compression moulded electrical part for sub-sea applications.
“These are really positive times for the business and it would be fantastic to come away from this conference with some new contacts established.”
Compression moulded plastic products in high demand
Such has been the success enjoyed by the business recently, night-time shifts have been reintroduced to help meet the demand of customers, and a recruitment drive launched for more factory operatives to join the team.
“We’ve specialist expertise in the manufacture of electrical plugs and connections for the mining industry, firewall brackets for the construction industry and friction discs which are used in breaking systems across the automotive sector. We’re constantly producing thousands of these products,” added Mr Davidson.
“We’ve also increased our work for clients in the rail industry over the past 24 months, manufacturing key parts for railway signaling systems which are used around the world.
“I’m certainly keen to speak to representatives of any businesses who may require those kind of products, or of course with businesses who may want to find a solution to manufacturing products which have to perform in high-intensity environments, as that is where compression moulded products stand apart.”
The Interplas event will features over 500 exhibitors and is expected to attract more than 12,000 attendees from across the industry, between September 26-28.
