Fairgrieves using ability to manufacture large and technically demanding composite components to grow passenger transport sector work

Fairgrieve Compression Moulding managing director Barry Davidson says the firm is placing a focus on the manufacture of large and technically demanding composite components which are ‘beyond the capacity of competitors’.

Following significant investment, the 113-year-old business has carved out a niche in the market thanks to the decades of experience of its team, and also its own 600-ton compression moulding press.

Mr Davidson says the machinery is ideal for the manufacture of parts for the bus, coach and rail industries, which require large composite parts, often in large numbers.

“Over the last five years we’ve built up considerable experience manufacturing large SMC components and assemblies for the passenger transport sector, and it’s an area of  business which has real potential for us,” said Mr Davidson.

“We’re now actively looking to build new relationships across the bus, coach and rail industries.

“Ou 600-ton compression moulding press gives us the capability to manufacture large and technically demanding composite components which are beyond the capacity of competitors, and combined with our in-house finishing and assembly capability, we have a lot to offer vehicle manufacturers, accessibility-system manufacturers and Tier 1 suppliers.”

‘Working with the right partners’

Fairgrieve’s capability extends beyond moulding as trimming, drilling, finishing, insert installation and final assembly can all be undertaken in-house, meaning the business can supply anything from individual moulded components through to completed assemblies ready for integration.

The business is also developing energy generating mouldings used for capturing pedestrian and vehicle motion and converting this into electrical energy.

“We are particularly interested in speaking to companies looking for support with new product and component development, large-format SMC and composite manufacture, finished components and assemblies, UK supplier localisation, supplier resourcing or second-source manufacture,” added Mr Davidson.

“For me, our growth in this market sector is all about building on the experience we’ve developed, working with the right partners and establishing long-term, sustainable manufacturing relationships.”

Fairgrieve operates from its award-winning North East manufacturing site, with accredited management systems to ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 standards.
