Fairgrieves invests in solar power to improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon footprint

Fairgrieve Compression Moulding is investing in solar technology to improve energy efficiency and reduce our carbon footprint with the installation of panels on the roof of our production site.

As part of the internationally recognised ISO 14001 standard for environmental management systems (EMS) achieved earlier this year, we are committed to taking proactive measures to minimise our environmental footprint.

And, in a climate of continually surging energy prices, for businesses such as ours, which at times manufacture 24 hours a day to meet customer demand, energy saving solutions are key.

“Energy prices can be crippling in the modern day for manufacturing businesses such as ourselves, so looking at alternative methods of energy supplies has been in our minds for some time,” said Managing Director Barry Davidson.

“It was something we put a real focus to when working towards our ISO 14001 standard earlier in the year, as not only is it an excellent way to reduce our carbon footprint, which all companies should be committed to doing, but will also reduce our overheads and to make a positive impact on our bottom line.”

Experts carrying out installation

Fairgrieves appointed Blackpool-based Thompsons Solar Installations to fit the new solar system, who set to work last week installing the panels to the roof of the factory.

The installation is being overseen by Thompson’s project manager Jon Kemp, and Fairgrieves’ own Health and Safety Manager, Michael Collier.

The site has had scaffolding erected to allow safe access to the roof top, with safety barriers erected around the perimeter of the roof. The installation should take around four weeks in total.

Mr Davidson says Fairgrieves hopes to generate significant savings on its energy bills as a result of the investment.

“This installation has come at a good time for us as we’re expecting our factory to be very busy early in the New Year on the back of some orders taken at the business, which is also likely to include a period of 24 hour manufacturing,” he said.

“Being able to look at our projections for next year, and factor in a significant saving on energy, is really important. Businesses have to do all they can these days to reduce costs, and this is an important step for us.”
